The metaphor poems capture life by using comparisons. Write any poem or story using an extended metaphor (comparison without using like or as). Let the poem or story surprise the reader by using a unique metaphor that may have never been used before to describe some aspect of your life!!

    The Metaphor of Life

Life is a lunar eclipse, half is dark, half is light
Life is an enemy, you go down but not without a fight

Life is a hamburger, if you don’t hold it right, it will all fall out
Life is a treasure hunt, you search, find and round about

Life is a song, it is going to end sometime
Life is a time bomb, it is going to run out of time

Life is and M16A1, you can go fully or semi, but will run out of ammo

Life is an essay, keep working on it until it is perfect

Life is a haircut, sometimes it is too short

Life is a good football game, it will end in sudden death

Life is outer space, it keeps going and going, but the end is unclear
Life is life, and that is just how it is!

  2.   Allison K. Says:

    Moon Life

    Life is a moon,
    Shining like a silver spoon.
    Then it changes phase
    To a dark, dreary maze

    Clouds will come to cover
    And so you soon discover
    When it’s out of sight,
You lose your luster and might.

    Eclipses block felicity,
    But hope lies in simplicity.
    It’s luminescent bright,
    In a crescent of light.

  3.   Alexandria Y. Says:

    Performing Life

Life is putting on a show.
When you don’t get the role you want, you’re filled with emotion.
When you don’t know what to do, you improvise.
You have to do your best to please your audience.
When you don’t do what they’re expecting, you’ve disappointed them.
You can try your best to put on the best show, but sometimes it’s still not enough.
As soon as your act begins and you look out into the audience, you’re frightened and begin to forget things you’re supposed to do.
You can practice and practice, but sometimes you’re still not prepared.
You have to constantly practice your lines.
If you mess up your lines, the audience just might remember it.
You have an urge to get into the spotlight, but you hesitate because you know if you don’t get your steps right, the audience will see it and perhaps judge.
But once you step into the spotlight, you begin to realize how happy the audience really is with you.

  4.   Phil S. Says:

    Sorrow

    Sorrow is a seed
    Buried deep inside.
    It’s something we’ll all feed,
    And make it grow wide.

    Every tear we shed,
    Every sob we gasp,
    that seed will spread
    soon out of our grasp.

Its vines will will clench our heart and soul,
And the feeling will bring us despair.
Yet it still grows beyond control,
    Making our life tear.

We’ll feel that the world is going to end,
And there’s nothing exciting to do.
It’s like walking alone without a friend,
As if everyone has deserted you.

    But lift up your head,
    You don’t have to feel down;
If you just flood yourself with joy instead,
It’ll make all the vines drown.

    And you’ll feel completely free.

    A night at the movies
    By: Divya Erram

I can be horror I can be a fright
I am watched by many every day and night
    I’m a myth, a legend, a story of a heroic knight

I can be “Epic”, a “Comeback”,
    Or just a romantic comedy
I’m sometimes shortened to be on T.V.

I may come from the past or visit the future
I’m filled with stars and make some too

And if you don’t want to go to long to see me,
I’ll come to a theatre near you

  6.   Jessica Says:

Colorguard is a year of four seasons,
The harsh winter, the fun fall, the happy spring, the breath taking summer,
The extremes of each season, the extremes of the dance and weapon work,
The harsh coldness of the snow, the harsh cermonstanses of messing up,
The fun in the leaves, the fun of your friends,
The happy laughter when you play outside, the happyness of doing something right,
The hot, unbearable summer, the unbearable practices,
Tornadoes that ruin your house, colorgaurd that ruins your day,
Colorgaurd can do a lot of good and bad in your life, just as the weather can,
It can be good it can be bad it just depends on the time and day.

  7.   Matt C Says:

    Metaphor Riddle

I am found within a dictionary.
I am loved by most, but to their other loved ones I am hated.
I am within flames and their smoke, and even in some plants.
I am invisible, but yet seen and known very well.
I am a silent killer that my victims asked to be killed by.
I am never accused of the killings, but instead accuse my weapons.
I am sometimes called the root of all evil, as a brother to greed.
I am sometimes wanted to leave, but most people don’t realize I’m there
I am someone who makes life interesting and colorful, but not for the ones around them.
Wanna know who I am? My name is already there, just look at the start.

  8.   Danielle H. on Sonnet Says:

I am responding to both of the metaphors above this just to let y’all know: anyways…I think that these are both completly and totally amazing metaphors. I am likin’ the themes and vibes(and i am not going hippy of all yall)goin on in these things. They are really nice and powerful! Great word choice Allison! You both rocked my socks with those ones!!!;]

  9.   Matthew S. Says:

    War in Iraq
I disagree completely with the war. It is useless bloody and stupid. Our government is uneducated in what is really going on in Iraq. America wants everyone to be friends. We don’t get that you can’t make two nations that hate each other work together. It’s Vietnam all over again. We are fighting another countries war. There is only a small percentage of Muslims that are terrorists. Those few people are called Alkiada. We are so uneducated on other cultures that we don’t understand what they believe and why they are doing what they are doing. I hate it because it is making the people in America ignorant toward the Muslim religion.
We always try to make everyone like each other and we don’t understand is that some people can not work together. We should be trying to help ourselves and help people like us instead of having them like each other. To them they are fighting a holy war. It’s a war of the religions and we shouldn’t be interfering. We have no side in this war we just kill whoever tries to kill us. America is the most hated country in the entire world. We are wasteful ignorant and destructive. We always have to be in every single war that goes on if the people there want help or not. We have to learn to except not destroy.
All we are doing in that country is causing more suffering. We making more deaths and more innocents killed. We are driving people to kill. The human body wasn’t made to kill. It wasn’t made to hurt other humans. That is why people have to go through so much training before they can kill. We train so much and yet a lot of times it’s not enough and all these solders coming back have gone mad. My grandpa who fought in World War 2 was partial crazy. He would wake up in the middle of the night screaming and saying that he will never forget the screams of his dying friends. We have to stop this fighting or our world really will implode. We will fight until the government thinks it’s too much and launch the nuclear bombs a kill all living life.
Why do we have the power to completely wipe out all life on earth 3 times under our feet? We have no need for violence all it does is help us kill better and easier. This war is going to drain our economy. It is going to make us all suffer if it doesn’t stop soon. George Bush had no right to start this war. He had no right to keep it going this long. He started this war out of pure anger. We all remember 9 11 but we don’t understand that there was no reason to go in and start killing. That was only a small portion of the Muslims. They actually aren’t even Muslim. In the Koran or the bible of the Muslims it clearly states that you are not to injure women children or old people. Those people hurt all of those people. All this war does is waste our money makes us suffer and teach ignorance. I hate is so much, but as long have republicans have the power over the government this will continue.
I am so happy for this year’s election because Bush will finally be taken out of office. Out of all the presidents we have had over the course of America’s history he by far did the worst and did the most damage to our economy. George Washington warned us about all the things that have happened to us. He warned us about Treaties and political parties but look at us now we have both and that’s what we rely on. I just hope that we can get a Democratic president so that we can finally end this bloody stupid war.

  10.   Aidan C. Says:

    Nature

Nature is a flower, its petals soft and fragrant.
Giving food to hummingbirds, and closing after dark.

Nature is a thunderstorm, black or grey, loud and angry.
Scaring people, and animals, threatening us all.

Nature is an eagle flying high above,
Soaring over rivers and valleys, free, powerful and proud.

Nature is a waterfall, cascading down a mountainside
searching for a river, finally meeting the sea.

Nature is an autumn leaf, dancing in the wind.
    Swirling, tumbling, falling, dying underneath.

Nature is a mountain, tall, steep and rocky,
Looking over the valleys, bringing life to streams.

Nature is a twinkling star, shining in the night,
Lighting someone else’s world, far and long ago.

  11.   Maddy D. Says:

Life is like an unrehearsed play,
Only everyone is bad at improving
And there aren’t enough song and dance numbers!

Our audience, those who know us the best…
Ourselves watch our performance and know when we are “acting”.

Able to see right through us the crowd wants to jump up and scream
“That’s no really me!!!”, but they know that will ruin the illusion.

So, unable to point out the flaws of our horrible show,
They sit back and grimace at every turn in the melodrama plot.

As we randomly kill of this bit-part characters
We all just pray that we get the happily ever after.

So, our once upon a time play goes on and on.
And there is never a chance to break out of this cycle.

  12.   Ann D. Says:

    Cloud

    I move with the wind
I am light as a feather
I can brighten or darken a day
    I make the moon shade
    You will never discover
    Unless you wonder

  13.   liana b Says:

My childhood was a family picnic.
Look around and all you’d see were giant grins.

Every once in a while a bad raccoon would get into the garbage
Then you could hear a laugh
    And another
And another until we could laugh no more

Every now and then a scream was heard
But only to realize it was because of a bee
A tiny danger that could be settled with a swat

The sun would beat down on you
But eventually a very kind tree branch would come to give you shade and comfort

Sometimes you had to sit upon an uncomfortable bench
But you didn’t mind because you knew there was a giant raspberry pie just waiting to make it okay

And on occasion we would go for a hike
A hike not enough to make you tired
But enough for you to enjoy the ride
A hike with fun unexpected twists and turns
And rocks to climb that made you feel like superman when you reached the top

Then what came after it was all said and done?
A bumpy road with many twists and turns
    And the occasional car sickness
Only to know that someday soon we will go back for another happy family picnic
Even if the family has changed a little over time.

  14.   Nick Edwards 3rd period Says:

    The earth
    The rock
    The dirt and the grass
    The sand and the waves
    The concrete and asphault
    Digging your graves
    The gas chamber air
    Murdering the ozone
    2nd degree killing
    And well be alone
    We must now shout

    To change the lives
    In a seed of sanity
    The air
    Suffocations strong
    To bring upon
    To change the earth

    The microcosm
    The amoeba
    The bags in the water
    The cans in the sea
The look on their face when they cant flee
The end of world is coming fast
    So save your past

    To change the lives
    In a seed of sanity
    The air
    Water
    Sun…..
Will deplete us all in are tiny lives compared to the joy
    Of the earth

    Judgement day
    Will kill us all
Its right ahead when the whole world drowns
    It is the end
    It is the end
    It is the end
    We must make a change…..

    To change the lives
    In a seed of sanity
    The air
    Suffocations strong
    To bring upon
    To change the earth
    Change the earth.

  15.   Nick Edwards 3rd period Says:

    The wood freshens the air
The cool breeze lightly ripping over my air like the dimple of sun
    The typing of keys
    Of writing words of these
The swaying of waves catched by the moons long rope
Attached around the keys around my front door
Lumber jacks say goodbye as the cold says hi
    The dance of the wolfs
    In the end of time
    Meeting to one place
    But without your face
    I would feel erased
But if you come here I would see you again
But do u know where I really am?

  16.   Savannah R. Says:

    For You…

    You are a light, shining at the end of a darkened tunnel;
I feel as though there’s sudden hope for making it out of my problems okay.

You are the wind beneath my wings, gently alerting me of your presence.
I have yet to be ready for flight, but you’ll give me a push when I am.

You are a chihuahua puppy, bold and outgoing, but as loyal as possible.
I feel protected with you around, regardless of your size.

You are true love’s kiss– soft, warm, and passionate.
I feel reminded of everything that’s happened and nearly melt.
