How does love sacrifice for others? It can take the form of laying one’s life down for a friend, serving one’s country, or just putting another’s interests above your own. Anne Frank started maturing when she began to see how her actions could help or hurt others (i.e., her mother). Her gifts to the others was one expression of her love. Write about any type of love that sacrifices.

Our view of the world and ourselves are shaped by so many factors. Anne Frank went into hiding as a child and left as an adult. Her views of herself and others changed as she experienced the hardship of hiding out from the Nazis. Write about any aspect of how your views have changed in your journey from childhood to adulthood? What has shaped your views? What turning point has impacted your view of yourself, the world, or others?

This week we have begun to read about a teenager who suffered during the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a time of systematic persecution of the Jews from 1933 to 1945. It was a time of persecution, imprisonment, slave labor, deliberate starvation, torture, and mass murder resulting in the deaths of some six million Jews. Jews, however, weren’t the only ones singled out for mistreatment. The Nazis murdered around five million other people they deemed “inferior”–Gypsies, disabled, political dissidents. Suffering from hatred and slavery is a theme that every generation of humans has experienced in some degree. This week, you may write an essay about human suffering in general or focus in on a specific person or group of people who suffered greatly. You may reflect on how their courage in the midst of evil, hatred, or suffering left a legacy for future generations.
